Bulgaria is usually known for its 'Gold Beach'. But even for winter sport enthusiasts it has become a favorite winter destination. The skiing region Bansko in the Pirin Mountains is supposedly one of the most modern resorts in the eastern part of Europe. Here people invested lots of money into the infrastructure of the skiing area which is why you will find lifts and pistes in top conditions. With more than 50 kilometers of trails (31 mi) it is very much able to compete with ski resorts in the Alps. Regarding the amount of slopes the neighboring area of Borovets in the Rila Mountain Range can definitely keep up with the Alps with 60+ piste kilometers (37+ mi). This area was and still is host to many World Cup races. It is the oldest ski region in Bulgaria and is located directly at the foothills of the Musala Mountain. With a height of 2.925 meters (9596 ft) it is the highest summit in the region of the Balkans. Other larger skiing regions would be Pamporovo and Chepelare in the Rhodope Mountains.
