Even though the resort lies directly at the main ridge of the Alps and is very close to the heavy snowfall the Alps experience from the north, the Ötztal valley is usually not blessed with heaps of snow. Nonetheless we award the resort with the ultimate score. Because the resort is located high up at 3.300 meters (10826.8 ft), it is usually possible to start the ski season in November already. At the glaciers Rettenbachgletscher and Tiefenbachgletscher the lifts sometimes open up in September and the season last till May. At around autumn Sölden has an almost one hundred percent guarantee of snow in the resort. All the important slopes get an extra coat of snow through the snow making facilities, if snow is scarce. The ski runs to the valley are almost constantly covered with snow of the machines. A couple of years back Sölden was able to provide ski fun even during the summer months. Since the glacier tongues in the Ötztal are slowly withdrawing, Sölden has reasonably decided to completely close down the resort during summer.
