Party on the Slopes: Austria’s Après-Ski Hotspots

For some, it’s the highlight of winter, for others, an overrated spectacle: après-ski. But anyone who’s ever partied in a true après-ski hotspot knows it’s about much more than just grabbing a beer after the last run. For many, après-ski is just as much a part of a winter holiday as skiing itself – especially in party-loving Austria.

We reveal which ten ski resorts rank among Austria’s ultimate après-ski hotspots – and why the parties are especially legendary there. Our selection is based on several factors: the number and variety of après-ski bars, the overall party and events scene in the resort, as well as major festivals and music highlights that attract thousands of visitors each year. The list also reflects the incredible diversity of Austria’s après-ski culture, ranging from luxurious and glamorous to laid-back and authentically alpine.

If you want to get in the party mood before even hitting your first run, check out our après-ski playlist featuring the best sing-along anthems, dancefloor favorites, and party classics — from timeless hits to the latest alpine chart-toppers.

Ischgl – The Ultimate Synonym for Après-Ski

Ischgl is the synonym for après-ski. Hardly any other resort has established itself so consistently as an international party capital. More than 30 bars, mountain huts, and clubs are packed into the village center. From the legendary Kuhstall bar to the iconic Trofana Alm, which has been the place to party in Ischgl since 1988. By mid-afternoon, the umbrella bars are already buzzing, and once the lifts close, the whole town comes alive.

World Stars on the Mountain Stage

The legendary Top of the Mountain concerts are a particular highlight. Global stars like Rita Ora, Robbie Williams, Lenny Kravitz, and Helene Fischer have taken the stage here at 2,300 meters above sea level, performing for thousands of ski fans who swap their ski boots for dancing shoes in an instant.

But Ischgl offers more than just a spectacular season opening and closing. Every spring, the resort celebrates the end of the season with its Spring Blanc event series, a unique blend of sunshine, snow, music, and fine dining that turns spring in the Alps into a true experience. With live concerts, gourmet highlights, and outdoor festivals, Ischgl reveals its indulgent side — always served with its signature touch of glamour and high energy.

The crowd is international, young, and ready to party. From champagne lounges and laser-lit nightclubs to traditional mountain huts blasting Schlager hits, Ischgl offers the full spectrum of après-ski entertainment.

Our Take: No other place brings together so many top-tier venues, major events, and pure party energy in one spot. In Ischgl, après-ski isn’t just an activity, it’s a way of life.

Sölden – Glaciers, World Cup Racing, and Party Vibes

Sölden is the beating heart of the Alps: sporty, young, and electric. The resort combines two glaciers, World Cup flair, and a lively party scene into one perfect mix. Around 20 bars, clubs, and umbrella huts keep the atmosphere buzzing every day along the village’s famous bar street in the valley. Especially around the Giggijoch base station, the party often kicks off before sunset — whether at Fire & Ice, the Philipp Bar, or the legendary Schirmbar Sölden, where guests from all over the world come together.

Beats in the Snow

At the annual Electric Mountain Festival, held at 2,500 meters above sea level, the mountain transforms into a massive open-air stage featuring international DJs such as Martin Garrix, Steve Aoki, and Fritz Kalkbrenner. Combined with the annual Ski World Cup Opening, the result is a season packed with music and high energy.

Our Take: This is where the energy of winter sports blends seamlessly with the buzzing bar street in the valley and the atmosphere of a music festival. Sölden lives and parties with heart, long into the night.

Hardly anywhere else in Austria boasts such a high concentration of top-notch huts, bars, and clubs as Saalbach-Hinterglemm. More than 20 après-ski hotspots — from rustic alpine huts to modern clubs — line the valley runs and the village center. Names like Goaßstall, Bauer’s Schi-Alm, Der Schwarzacher, and Hendl Fischerei have long been legends on the scene. At the Mega-Walleggalm, one of the largest and trendiest huts in the resort, partygoers celebrate to their heart’s content during live performances by Schlager stars such as Isi Glück. Saalbach-Hinterglemm is the stylish yet effortlessly laid-back party destination of the Salzburger Land region.

Between Ski Goggles and Shot Glasses

What makes Saalbach so special is its unmistakable “Home of Lässig” vibe — an atmosphere that perfectly blends sport, music, and lifestyle. Alongside classics like Rave on Snow, the biggest winter festival for electronic music, the resort also shines with the Bergfestival, where national and international rock and pop acts perform right in the heart of the Alps. And when spring is on the horizon, the White Pearl Mountain Days transform the entire valley into a stylish open-air lounge, complete with laid-back DJ sounds, gourmet food, and sun loungers on panoramic mountain terraces.

Our Take: No other place combines alpine chic, modern music, and traditional warmth quite as perfectly. Saalbach is the ideal stage for anyone who wants to celebrate winter with style, sound, and passion.

St. Anton am Arlberg – Pure Cult Status

St. Anton is the birthplace of après-ski. This is where the concept was practically invented, the place where it all began. As early as the 1960s, people were already celebrating after a day on the slopes with Jagertee and live music. A tradition that has continued ever since. More than 15 bars and clubs make up the historic soul of après-ski.

The legendary MooserWirt and Krazy Kanguruh are located right on the slopes, your final turn of the day ends exactly where the party begins. Anyone who stops by in the afternoon experiences pure cult status. Thumping music, skiers dancing in their boots, and an atmosphere so authentic it has long since become the resort’s trademark.

Where Tradition Meets Big Events

Alongside the iconic Arlberg Kandahar race, St. Anton also draws crowds with the Schlagerliebe Live Open Air, where the mountains turn into one big stage. When Schlager stars perform in the snow and thousands of visitors sing along, it’s clear that tradition and party culture go hand in hand here.

Our Take: As the birthplace of modern après-ski, St. Anton stands for living tradition, infectious music, and boundless joie de vivre. A place that makes the Alps come alive year after year.

Schladming – Sporty, Welcoming, Legendary

In the ski resort of Schladming, you’ll find not only plenty of rustic huts right on the slopes, but also several top spots for après-ski fans looking to continue the fun back in the village after a day on the mountain. The Platzhirsch-Alm, for example, offers a lively mix of après-ski bar and restaurant for winter sports enthusiasts. Other highlights include Siglu in the heart of Schladming and the Hohenhaus Tenne, the largest après-ski venue in Europe.

The pedestrian zone in this Dachstein ski town is famously known as the “Bermuda Triangle”, more than a few party lovers have disappeared somewhere between Hanglbar, Siglu, and Niederl’s Bar. Schladming strikes the perfect balance between serious sporting ambition, festival-like vibes, and warm Styrian hospitality.

Where World Cup Fever Meets Party Vibes

The legendary Schladming Night Race — a World Cup night slalom with up to 50,000 spectators — turns the town into one huge celebration every year. The party kicks off after the race and often doesn’t end until sunrise. Add to that the Schladming-DachsteinSki Opening with world stars like the Backstreet Boys, plus concerts and culinary events, and it’s easy to see why Schladming has earned its spot among Austria’s top après-ski destinations.

Our Take: Here, sporting passion and a love of partying blend into a truly unique experience. It’s a place where World Cup fever and après-ski vibes go hand in hand, and winter sports become pure emotion.

Flachau – The Home of Good Vibes

Flachau is Austria’s friendly, down-to-earth party hotspot, the kind of place where good vibes are guaranteed. More than 15 huts and bars, including the legendary Hofstadl and Dampfkessel, keep the atmosphere lively right by the base station. In Flachau, it’s not about excess but about togetherness, where music, positivity, and good company set the tone.

Stars, Great Vibes, and Salzburg Hospitality

One of the annual highlights is the Flachau Winter Opening, which brings major stars like Andreas Gabalier and DJ Ötzi to the stage and kicks off the season with a true celebration. The Women’s World Cup Slalom is another standout event, where sporting excitement and lively after-parties blend seamlessly. Numerous live concerts and events run throughout the entire season, making Flachau one of Austria’s most welcoming and relaxed après-ski scenes.

Our Take: As the heart of authentic, down-to-earth après-ski, Flachau combines charm, warmth, and great vibes like hardly any other place.

Mayrhofen – The Festival Hotspot

Mayrhofen is the epicenter of winter music. This is where skiing meets sound, sport meets show. Right at the foot of the Penkenbahn you’ll find Mayrhofen’s most famous après-ski spot: the Ice Bar, instantly recognizable by the giant polar bear on its roof, and usually just as packed as you’d expect. And as wild as the name suggests, things get lively at the Harakiri Bar, the steepest bar in the Zillertal. In the evening, the action shifts to the historic village center. At Brückenstadl, top live bands whip the crowd into a frenzy, while party and dance lovers feel right at home in the Schlüsselalm and the Speak Easy Area nightclubs.

Between Powder, Party, and Performance

The main highlight is the Snowbombing Festival, which draws thousands of visitors from all across Europe to the Zillertal every year. DJs, bands, and performers take over mountain huts, streets, and clubs, while skiers in costumes glide down the slopes and the entire town turns into one giant music festival. The lineup is rounded off by Full Metal Mayrhofen, where heavy guitar riffs, headbangers, and metal fans make the mountains shake. It’s a striking contrast to classic après-ski, and a perfect example of just how versatile Mayrhofen really is.

Our Take: Mayrhofen proves that après-ski can be much more than hut hits and Schlager music. Here, a day on the slopes blends with festival vibes, variety, and international flair, creating an experience for all the senses.

Kitzbühel - The Superlative

With well over 80,000 spectators over three days, the Kitzbühel races are among the biggest crowd favorites on the Ski World Cup circuit.

Kitzbühel is the epitome of elegant winter sports, the same goes for partying. Countless bars and lounges, like the famous Londoner Pub or the Streifalm, invite you to wind down after a day on the slopes with champagne, cocktails, and DJ beats. This is where ski fans, jetsetters, and bon vivants come together, right at the intersection of tradition and glamour. And when it’s time to dive into the nightlife, Club Take Five is the go-to spot for anyone ready to hit the dance floor. With a bit of luck, you might even end up sharing it with a VIP or two. And if you still have some cash left, you can always try your luck at the casino, and toast your winnings with a glass of champagne.

The Two H’s: Hahnenkamm and High Society

The social highlight of the winter season is the Hahnenkamm Race, a one-of-a-kind event that brings together sport, glamour, and celebration. Athletes, celebrities, and guests from around the world gather here for exclusive side events and legendary after-show parties. More often than not, after a long day at the races, the night continues at the nearby Stanglwirt in Going. This luxury hotel has long been synonymous with Austrian hospitality at its finest, and a hotspot for the rich and famous. By day, international stars and regular guests unwind in the spa, by night, you’ll often spot them again in Kitzbühel’s nightlife scene, whether at the Streifalm, the Londoner, or at private parties in the high society’s alpine chalets. The crowd is stylish, the atmosphere sophisticated, the setting luxurious, yet never stiff.

Our Take: Kitzbühel proves that après-ski can be refined, sophisticated, and exclusive, a ski culture defined by style and class.

Obertauern – High-Altitude Après-Ski Bliss

Obertauern stands for winter sports at the highest level, quite literally. Sitting at over 1,700 meters above sea level, it’s one of Austria’s most snow-sure resorts, which means a long season packed with energy, music, and joie de vivre. Snow is reliably guaranteed from November through May, and the entire village is designed like one big ski arena: from almost every hotel or mountain hut, you can head straight onto the slopes, and just as easily back into the après-ski action. With around 25 bars, pubs, and clubs, including iconic spots like Lürzer Alm, Edelweissalm, and Gruberstadl, Obertauern is a true paradise for night owls.

From the Slopes to the Dance Floor

The winter season here traditionally kicks off with a real highlight: the Obertauern Ski Opening, where top acts like Seiler und Speer regularly take the stage. The event marks the start of a season that lasts nearly six months and is defined by music, great vibes, and excellent snow conditions. After the opening, the Gamsleiten Kriterium, one of the biggest treasure hunts in the Alps, adds even more excitement to the mix.

Our Take: No other place combines snow reliability, high-altitude skiing, and high-spirited party vibes quite like Obertauern. Here, the celebrations begin with the very first snowfall, fueled by alpine warmth, Austrian humor, and a soundtrack that echoes well into spring.

Just 30 minutes from Innsbruck, Axamer Lizum is young, authentic, and full of energy. While big names like Ischgl or Sölden steal the spotlight, Axamer Lizum is a true insider tip for anyone who wants to combine après-ski with student vibes and a touch of urban flair.

At around 2,340 meters above sea level, you’ll find rustic huts, modern bars, and a laid-back atmosphere that’s especially popular with younger winter sports fans. Skiers, students, and locals come together here to round off a day on the slopes with music, drinks, and views of the Nordkette.

Student Parties and Skigaudi

One of the resort’s standout features is its Skigaudi events, which take place regularly in Axamer Lizum. Whether it’s the student ski opening, DJ battles in the snow, or the legendary parties at the base station, Axamer Lizum has long established itself as a go-to meeting point for the student scene. Prices here are noticeably more student-friendly than at many other ski openings. And if you still have energy after the last round, the après-ski fun can easily continue, thanks to free shuttle buses to Innsbruck, running regularly and dropping you right at the city’s most popular bars and clubs.

Instead of pricey entrance fees and VIP lounges, the focus here is on community, fun, and affordability, a concept that perfectly captures the spirit of student life.

Our Take: This ski resort combines close proximity to the city with true alpine vibes, offers more affordable parties away from the mainstream, and proves that après-ski can be a genuine experience, even without luxury and excess.
