The Obertauern Ski Resort: Perfect Ski-in/Ski-out
The Obertauern ski resort sits at around 1,740 meters above sea level in the Salzburger Land, approximately 90 kilometers south of Salzburg, nestled in the Radstädter Tauern mountains. Obertauern is one of Austria's snowiest winter sports destinations, offering reliable skiing from late November through early May. Around 100 kilometers of slopes between 1,630 and 2,313 meters are served by 26 modern lifts, including gondolas, combination lifts, and chairlifts.
What makes Obertauern truly special is its clever lift and slope layout: from anywhere in the village, you're just a short walk from the slopes. The famous circuit runs, the Red and Green Tauern Rounds, take skiers on a full loop around the resort without ever repeating a run (slope map).
More than half of the runs are marked blue, making the entire area well-suited for beginners and families alike. Those looking for a challenge will find it on the legendary "Gamsleiten 2," one of the steepest ungroomed mogul runs in Europe. Off the slopes, over 25 ski huts, night skiing at the Edelweißbahn, and a vibrant après-ski scene round out the experience.
