Winter Sports in the Caucasus and the Ural Mountains

Russia's Ural Mountains and the Caucasus region have plenty to offer to snow sports enthusiasts. Numerous ski resorts are found especially in the area around Mt. Elbrus (5,700 metres) in the north Caucasus region.

With over 70 kilometres of slopes, Rosa Khutor is Russia's largest ski resort. Ural's continental climate makes for cold winters with a high snow reliability. On top of that, resorts on the east side score with good infrastructure and perfectly groomed runs.

The less frequented ski resorts in Kamchatka peninsula at the north of Russia are a bit of an insider tip. Adventurous types can run down ungroomed slopes of extinct volcanoes. The only way up, however, is in a helicopter.

Winter sports in Russia gained international importance in 2014, when the Olympic Games were held in Sochi. In the course of this major event, many of the ski resorts were enlarged and modernised.
