Skiing in Big Sky Country

Montana, affectionately known as Big Sky Country, is straddled by the Rocky Mountains and therefore belongs to the so-called "Mountain States". The name is derived from the Spanish word “montaña” and hints at the mountainous, rugged character of the US State. It should there come as no surprise that Montana is home to a number of outstanding resorts. Several are first-class in all categories: great slopes, the finest American powder and unique panoramic views. The state can easily compete with neighbouring Colorado and the Canadian provinces British Columbia and Alberta.

With 2,350 ha and about 150 trails, the Big Sky Resort is one of the largest ski areas in the entire United States. Whitefish Mountain and Big Mountain both have everything a skier's heart desires and they are especially popular among freeriders. But even smaller ski resorts like Teton Pass or Montana Snowbowl provide a top-notch skiing experience and are favorites for many families. All in all, skiing in Montana is a really relaxed and laid-back experience. Montana is one of the best-kept secrets for all winter sport enthusiasts due to its sheer size alone: large resorts ensure that the slopes aren't overrun by the masses, leaving everyone peace and space, and ensuring that waiting lines are short to non-existent.

The name of the local airport alone is a dead giveaway you're traveling to the mountains: The Glacier Park Airport in Flathead is the gateway to all the skiing in Montana. Numerous larger airports in the US offer direct flights to here.
