Saalbach-Hinterglemm: New Reiterkogel Gondola Extended to the Summit

A major modernization is underway at the Reiterkogel in Hinterglemm, set to significantly improve access to this popular ski and hiking area. The existing lift from the 1990s will be replaced by a powerful new 10-person gondola, while at the same time extending the line to create a longer, year-round direct connection all the way to the summit. The result: more comfort, shorter wait times, and a seamless, straightforward ride to the very top.

Construction on the new Reiterkogel gondola in Saalbach-Hinterglemm kicked off right after the ski season ended on April 7th. As part of the project, the existing 8-person gondola, in operation since 1997, will be taken out of service and fully replaced.

The new lift is scheduled for completion in November 2026, putting it on track to open in time for the 2026/27 winter season. In total, the Skicircus is investing around 35 million euros in the new Reiterkogel gondola, which will operate year-round in both winter and summer.

With this project, Saalbach is embracing cutting-edge cable car technology from Doppelmayr. The new 10-person monocable detachable gondola has a capacity of up to 2,500 passengers per hour and runs along a route of approximately 2.1 kilometers, climbing nearly 670 vertical meters.

The ride takes under nine minutes, ensuring fast and efficient access to the Reiterkogel. Modern gondola cabins with a contemporary design and improved spaciousness will make for a noticeably more comfortable journey.

The new gondola makes the Reiterkogel more accessible than ever. The direct ride to the summit saves time and takes the stress out of getting into the ski area. On top of that, the increased capacity means shorter wait times and a smoother flow of guests throughout the mountain.

Ride comfort is also getting a noticeable upgrade. The new cabins offer more space and a modern interior, making the journey not just faster but genuinely more enjoyable. And then there's the panoramic scenery on the way up, which turns the ride itself into part of the experience.

One more thing worth noting: this summer, Hinterglemm isn't just getting a new gondola, the Alpine Palace hotel is also undergoing a major transformation. Raiffeisenbank is pouring 40 million euros into a full renovation of the luxury property. According to ORF, the 5-star hotel will be managed going forward by the Falkensteiner Michaeler Group, with nearly 280 beds.

While construction on the Reiterkogel is underway, Hinterglemm's summer offering remains as varied as ever, just temporarily relocated to the Hochalm. Under the motto "Hochalm – your mountain adventure", a diverse program with new attractions is taking shape there.

One highlight is Kodok, the guardian of the Reiterkogel, who is moving to the Hochalm for the summer season. Around the Hochalm reservoir, a discovery trail will take shape where Kodok introduces guests of all ages to the world of mountain railways.

Rounding out the program are guided hikes, an outdoor fitness area, and events such as the OKIDOKI children's festival. All of this makes the Hochalm the go-to destination for summer fun in 2026, while the Reiterkogel undergoes its full transformation just one mountain over, ready to reopen next year.
