The area of East Tyrol is congruent with the administrative region of Lienz. You will already know that this region is pretty special by the moment you’ll get here. The location speaks for itself: The exclave is separated from the rest of Tyrol by a narrow strip. Right in between there is the Salzburg and South Tyrol area. A huge part of the mountain range Hohe Tauern is located in East Tyrol. In addition, you’ll find the Lienz Dolomites and parts of the Carnic Alps. The East Tyrol area alone features 266 peaks that are higher than 3000 meters (about 10,000 ft). The Großglockner rises above every other mountain with 3,798 meters (12,460 ft). This makes it the highest summit in Austria.
Altogether you’ll have seven ski resorts with more than 150 kilometers (93 miles) of trails to your disposal. It’s your choice if you want to hit a family ski resort or one of the true Freeride-Mekkas. Best known are St. Jakob in Defereggental, Silian Hochpustertal or Großglockner Resort Kals Matrei. Moreover, a winter vacation in Austria wouldn’t be complete without culinary joys. Hearty meals like Schlipfkrapfen and homemade sausages get even better with a schnapps shot.
East Tyrol is easy accessible via E54 to Kufstein and then you just have to change onto Felbertauernstraße. The local trains take you to Lienz from Bozen or Kitzbühel.
