Tänndalen is located close to the Norwegian border in the Funäsfjällen region and has grown into one of Sweden's largest ski resorts since the first lift opened on Hamrafjället back in the 1950s. With 54 runs spread across four entry points, the majority of them marked red and blue, it's a particularly good fit for beginners and families. Thanks to its favourable elevation and proximity to the Norwegian border, Tänndalen enjoys exceptionally reliable snow conditions.
Hamrafjället - The heart of the ski area
Hamrafjället is the largest of the four entry points and offers runs for every ability level. Children and beginners can start at Barnliften, which offers both button lift and a magic carpet lift, and then take the green marked “53 Barnbacken”. Also graded green and blue, and therefore ideal for novices, are "50 Lodgesvängen" and "51 Gröngölingen", both starting from the summit and giving less experienced skiers the chance to enjoy a longer descent. There are also adventure areas such as Drömskogen and Äventyret, where you can get creative and ride in the forest, at an easier level.
Confident intermediates can take on the red-marked "49 4 Motion Hill" or "48 Headstråket", while experts will find a proper challenge on the black run "45 Vargstupet". Freestylers, meanwhile, will find a fun park and ski cross track in the run “46 Santa Cruz”. A lot of the slopes are accessible from the chair lift Hamra Komfort, which offers both wind protection and seat heating.
Buskvallen - For intermediates and advanced skiers
From the top station of Hamra Komfort, skiers can access the Buskvallen area, but there is also parking if you wanna start there right away. Here red runs dominate, such as “29 Kläpphanget” and “34 Vallhanget”, so solid skiing ability is a must. Here there is also a park for freestylers. Buskvallen offers multiple ways of getting to the other areas, such as “31 Hamra Treversen” to get back to Hamrafjället, or “28 Tännlöpan” that will get you from Buskvallen to Tännporten.
Tännporten - A family paradise
At the third entry point which you can reach both by car or skies, lies Tännporten, where everyone can feel at home. In Krokskogen, children can explore skiing in the forest with pre-made runs. Here you can learn to ski through play. Other more intermediate or advanced skiers can explore surrounding terrain and take the chair lift Tännporten Express, and go down the black run “15 Pebe’s” or the red run “10 Skrållan”.
Svansjöliftarna - Varied skiing near Storsjökläppen
The runs at Svansjöliftarna complete the picture at Tänndalen, the last entry point which you can reach by both car and skies. Intermediate slopes like “3 Knix” and “5 Foxtrot” offer enjoyable cruising, while easier runs further up towards Storkläppen open this part of the resort to less experienced skiers as well. At Svansjöliftarna, freeriders can make the most of Freeride Paradise, spreading over multiple slopes offering untouched snow.
Cross-country skiing in Tänndalen and Funäsfjällen
Beyond the alpine skiing, Tänndalen is perhaps best known as a cross-country destination. The Funäsfjällen trail network covers around 300 kilometres of machine-groomed trails for both classic and skate skiing, winding through valleys, birch forests and open high mountain terrain. The interconnected system links Tänndalen, Funäsdalen, Bruksvallarna, Ramundberget, Fjällnäs and Tännäs, and is regarded as the longest continuous trail network in the world. From week 7, additional fjäll trails open above the tree line, offering stunning high-altitude panoramas. The season starts as early as October on stored snow in Bruksvallarna and runs through to late April, sometimes even into early May.
