The Cross-Country Area
Nestled in the heart of the Funäsfjällen region in Härjedalen, close to the Norwegian border, Tänndalen is part of the world's longest interconnected cross-country ski trail network. With around 300 kilometres of machine-groomed trails winding through valleys, birch forests and open high mountain terrain, there's no shortage of ground to cover. On top of that, some 450 kilometres of marked mountain routes await. All trails are groomed for both classic and skate skiing.
A connected trail system from village to village
The trail network links Tänndalen, Funäsdalen, Bruksvallarna, Ramundberget, Fjällnäs and Tännäs, designed so that skiers can step onto world-class trails directly from any of these villages. The entire system is excellently signposted with distance markers, trail maps and rest cabins along the way. From easy valley trails to challenging high-altitude routes above the tree line, the Funäsfjällen cater to every ability level. The season kicks off as early as October on stored snow in Bruksvallarna and runs all the way through to late April – sometimes even into early May.
Mountain trails and waffle huts in the high country
A real highlight are the fjäll trails, which open around week 7 on the high plateaus above the tree line. Up here, skiers are treated to sweeping panoramic views across the vast, snow-covered mountain landscape. Several waffle huts dot the trails, offering the perfect excuse to pause and refuel. The most popular is Andersborg Våffelstuga at Skarvarna, where crispy waffles and coffee are served in a cosy mountain setting. Getting there is easy – by snowmobile or snow weasel (tracked vehicle), which runs regularly from the centre of Tänndalen.
Equipment, lessons and ski bus
Those without their own gear can kit themselves out at Hamra Sports Shop, Tänndalens Skiduthyrning or Tännportens Skiduthyrning. Cross-country lessons for beginners and more experienced skiers are also available. A free ski bus connects all the villages in the Funäsfjällen region and is included with the trail pass, making it simple to mix and match starting points and routes throughout the day.
Sweden's best ski resort – three years running
The Funäsfjällen region has been voted Sweden's best ski resort three years in a row (2023, 2024 and 2025) – in no small part thanks to its outstanding cross-country offering. The area's exceptional snow reliability comes down to its favourable elevation and proximity to the Norwegian border, which brings plenty of precipitation throughout the winter months.
The Most Beautiful Tracks
Among the highlights of the Funäsfjällen trail network is the high mountain trail up to Andersborg Våffelstuga at Skarvarna, which opens above the tree line from week 7 and rewards skiers with sweeping views across Hamrafjället, Skenörsfjället and Storvigeln – the ascent is easily done by snowmobile or snow weasel. For those looking to truly explore the region, the Funäsfjälltriangel is hard to beat: a multi-day loop on groomed trails between Funäsdalen, Bruksvallarna, Tänndalen and Fjällnäs, with daily stages of 15 to 20 kilometres across open mountain terrain and through birch forests, typically available between weeks 10 and 17. More ambitious skiers will be drawn to the route over Mittåkläppen, where a steep climb is rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of Skarsfjället, Sylarna and Helags – Sweden's highest peak south of the Arctic Circle. For a more relaxed day out, the gentle loop to Ösjöstugan near Ramundberget winds through snow-laden birch woods and open moorland, with waffles and hot chocolate waiting at the other end.
