On the Rettenbach Glacier in Sölden, a spectacular live event awaits you on April 10, 2026, set in the heart of the Alps and this year with extra reason to celebrate: the glacier spectacle HANNIBAL is turning 25. At an altitude of 3,000 meters, the glacier transforms every two years into one of the world's largest natural stages, drawing over 300 performers and around 8,000 spectators.
What is HANNIBAL?

The story is as old as it is legendary: in 218 BC, military commander Hannibal crossed the Alps in just 10 days to reach Italy. He, his army of 60,000 men, and 37 elephants defied steep mountain faces, sudden weather shifts, and avalanches, and ultimately conquered Italy.
HANNIBAL is no ordinary theater and no conventional ski event, it's both, and so much more. The artist collective Lawine Torrèn, together with Ötztal Tourismus and Red Bull, brings the legendary Alpine crossing of the Carthaginian general Hannibal to life as a massive live performance set against the backdrop of the Tyrolean glacier world.
Pisten bullies transform into Hannibal's war elephants, an Austrian Armed Forces helicopter mingles among gods and mortals, skydivers rescue mythological figures from the air, and dancers take on the roles of Roman senators. Skiers, mountain guides, motocross riders, and skidoos populate the steep slopes of the Rettenbach Glacier, while the unmistakable voice of Harald Krassnitzer narrates the unfolding spectacle.
The evening's message is as simple as it is profound: hesitation can become the most decisive action of all.
Open-Air Stage at 3,000 Meters
The Rettenbach Glacier in Sölden forms the dramatic natural backdrop of the event. Spectators follow the action from the flat area in front of the cable car station at 2,668 meters, with an unobstructed view of the Schwarze Schneide peak at 3,257 meters. The stage itself sits at just over 3,000 meters, a setting that impresses on its own, long before the show even begins. The easiest way to get there is by train, bus, and shuttle from Sölden to the Rettenbach Glacier, with transfers already included in all ticket categories.
Weather as an Unpredictable Part of the Show
Since its premiere in April 2001, HANNIBAL has come to life across 16 performances. Some of the young cast members from back then have since become Olympic medalists, among them Fabio Gstrein. Nature remains the most unpredictable co-star of all: weather and world events are a built-in part of the performative concept. Renowned artists and athletes from across Europe and the United States collaborate alongside locals from the Ötztal valley, a combination that is truly one of a kind anywhere in the world.
