The Ski Resort
Nesfjellet Alpin in Nesbyen ranks among the up-and-coming family ski resorts in Hallingdal — roughly 2.5 hours from Oslo by car. What has put the resort on the map beyond the region is the Nesfjellet Express, opened in 2021: a detachable eight-seater chairlift with heated seats and weather hoods — the first of its kind in Norway. From the summit at just over 1,100 metres, runs of all difficulty levels lead back to the base, from wide beginner slopes and varied forest descents to steeper sections for intermediates. Two terrain parks — one for experienced riders, one for beginners and children — offer jumps, boxes and rails.
The children's area is thoughtfully designed: a dedicated path with animal sculptures, green-graded pistes and fenced-off zones ensure the youngest can practise their first turns in a safe environment. The mascot "Nessy" is a firm favourite with young skiers. Most accommodation around the resort sits right on the slopes and offers ski-in/ski-out access.
Interesting facts
- The vertical drop from summit to base is 366 m. The average difference in altitude between base and summit of Ski Resorts in Norway is 427 m. The highest point of the track is 1,102 m above sea level.
- Snow coverage is usually best during January, offering an average snow depth of 120 cm at summit elevation and 78 cm at the base.
On Mountain Dining
At the base of the ski area, the Skistua serves as the meeting point after skiing, offering hot meals, snacks and drinks.
Nightskiing
Every Friday after New Year, evening skiing is offered on four illuminated pistes from 16:00 to 20:00 — including an atmospheric setting in the floodlit terrain park.
Activities
The cross-country network around Nesfjellet encompasses over 450 kilometres of groomed trails through the expansive Hallingdal mountain landscape. From the summit of Snaufjellet, signposted trails lead back to the alpine centre — a combination of chairlift ride and cross-country skiing that is hard to match. In summer, Nesfjellet transforms into a mountain biking destination with its own bike park and a 9-hole golf course.
