The Ski Resort

The village of Kötschach-Mauthen is nestled between the Carnic and Gailtal Alps. The ski area there is an absolute family ski area. Seven kilometres of slopes can be explored by big and small winter sports enthusiasts.

From the descents, two kilometres are marked as easy and five as medium. A ideal practice terrain, because the kids can expect various light practice slopes, while the big ones can wobble down the red slopes. Four lifts, two of which are special children's practice lifts, take skiers and snowboarders up the mountain.

In the kids parkwith their own rope lift the team of the ski school teaches the basics of skiing in a playful way. Together with the mascot bear "Kömauli" the little ones can race down the ski mountain and master one or the other obstacle, such as the wave track, the practice jump or the treasure organ. The lovingly designed training area with its funny figures offers the perfect introduction to alpine winter sports. As part of the "Snowflake" campaign, children up to the age of 9 can ski free of charge.

Together with the local mountain guides, you can also undertake various ski tours in the ski area and explore the beauty of the Carinthian mountains. With the free ski bus the winter sports enthusiasts also have a connection to the Sonnenalpe Nassfeld, the largest ski area in Carinthia.

On Mountain Dining

To take a break in Kötschach-Mauthen, two huts invite you to stay. At 1,050 metres directly on the Laas ski slope, the rustic Ödenhütte is situated. Here the winter sports enthusiasts are spoiled with homemade Carinthian noodles, Brettljausen, game and grill dishes or salads from organic farming. There is also a at the bottom station ski hut, which serves its guests delicious Carinthian delicacies.

Activities

A visit to the Aquaarena should be planned in addition to the fun on the slopes. Here the little ones can enjoy splashing in the water and down the water slide while the adults relax in the sauna or steam room after a hard day on the slopes.

Who would like to enjoy also after skiing still the clear mountain air, for that there are different offers. Cross-country skiing-lovers will find many kilometres of perfectly groomed cross-country trails with both classic and skating tracks in Kötschach-Mauthen and the upper Gailtal.

The surrounding landscape also invites you to extended winter or snowshoe hikes. Or how about a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride through snowy forests? The little ones in particular are always welcome for a toboggan run on the two kilometre long, illuminated natural toboggan run at Gasthof Gailberghöhe.

But the region is also a true paradise for ice athletes. On the nearby Weissensee or in the ÖAV Freizeit Park Mauthen, young and old can play ice skating, ice climbing, curling or ice hockey. The highlight of the ÖAV Freizeit Park is the 28 metre high icefall climbing tower, also known as the "Alpine Marterpfahl". A great highlight is also the Lama Trekking. Together with the animals we cross-country through the snow-covered landscape.

Après-Ski and Nightlife

In order to let the successful skiing day come to an appropriate end, Kötschach-Mauthen has some good locations. To the après-ski in Käptn Hook's Partykeller there is great music and a real party atmosphere. The discotheque Poschi Bar invites you to delicious cocktails and turns night into day on the dance floor. Also in the Bar s' Beisl it can be celebrated exuberantly. If this is not enough for you, you can visit one or the other club in the nearby Nassfeld.

Getting here

By car:

From nearby Lienz it is only about 35 kilometres to the ski resort. Simply follow the E66 to Oberdrauburg and then turn onto the B110. This leads directly to Kötschach-Mauthen. Those coming from the east should drive via Klagenfurt. From there take the E66 (towards Pörtschach) for a short distance onto the A2 and then take the Hermagor exit onto the B111, which leads directly to the ski area. The distance from Salzburg to the north is about 205 kilometres. Take the A10 to Spittal an der Drau and then take the E66 via Lendorf and Steinfeld to Oberdrauburg. There the B110 branches off to Kötschach-Mauthen. You can park your car on the large parking lot at the ski area without any problems.

With public transport:

There is a train station in Kötschach-Mauthen. So you can get there comfortably by train. From Klagenfurt airport, which is about 120 kilometres away, it is also easy to travel to Kötschach-Mauthen by public transport.
