The Ski Resort
Hallingskarvet Skisenter lies hidden in the tiny mountain village of Sudndalen — 75 residents, no traffic lights, but one of the finest freeride slopes in southern Norway. Roughly 33 kilometres from Geilo, on the northern side of the mighty Hallingskarvet massif, the resort enjoys a legendary reputation among insiders: when the region gets a proper dump of snow, even the locals from Geilo head here. The reason: Sudndalen is what Norwegians call a "snow hole." Snowfall is so abundant that the grooming team sometimes can't keep up — for powder enthusiasts, a dream come true.
Two surface lifts carry you up to 1,244 metres, from where runs of up to three kilometres lead back to the base. Above the treeline, wide open slopes invite extended powder descents; lower down, sparse birch forest provides tree runs with natural obstacles. The terrain park was developed together with X-Games gold medallist Andreas Håtveit, who — like Olympic champion Hans Petter Buraas — is one of the village's 75 residents.
Interesting facts
- Elevated between 734 m and 1,244 m, the Ski Resort is among the 10 highest elevated Ski Resorts in Norway. The vertical drop from summit to base is 510 m. The average difference in altitude between base and summit of Ski Resorts in Norway is 424 m.
Snow Safety & Snowmaking
The position at the foot of the Hallingskarvet massif makes the resort one of the most snow-reliable in the region. Natural snowfall dominates, supplemented by a snowmaking system.
Activities
Around Sudndalen, over 110 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails stretch through the high-mountain landscape at the foot of the Hallingskarvet. Ski touring onto the Hallingskarvet plateau itself is possible from the top lift — though only for experienced skiers.
