The Sauerland is considered a skiing paradise for all winter sport enthusiasts in North Rhine-Westphalia. The so-called “country of the 1000 mountains” forms the northeastern part of the Rhenish Massif. Numerous ski resorts welcome ski and snowboard lovers to their expansive skiable terrain. Eight of those resorts are linked together to the Wintersport-Arena Sauerland and now offer a joint lift ticket. The largest of them all is the ski resort Winterberg. It is spread out onto seven mountains and provides 30 kilometers (18.6 mi) of slopes. Neuastenberg is a very popular resort due to the Heini-Pape-Hang slope, which is considered one of the most beautiful runs in the Sauerland. The resort Altastenberg is situated at the foothills of the mountain Kahler Asten, which is the highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia with an elevation of 841 meters (2759 ft).
The most populous federal state of Germany provides skiing fun not only during the winter season! With two indoor ski centers in Neuss and Bottrop, winter sport enthusiasts can enjoy skiing and snowboarding all year round. Most of these runs are popular among beginners, but also athletes who are working on a comeback. Nevertheless, even experts of the German Ski Association practice their techniques here.
