Winter is finally here and Ski resorts already awaiting with pure outdoor fun. Perfectly groomed ski slopes, great events and unique landscapes are offered in many ski resorts. But where do you really ski best? Skiresorts-Test.com introduces the world´s greatest ski resorts.
Ski Arlberg and Zermatt ahead of Serfaus Fiss Ladis
In the passed couple of years ski resort rankings were dominated by Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. But rivals never rest and so Ski Arlberg climbed on top of the list this year. „By constructing the new cable-car, connecting Lech Zürs and Warth Schröcken, a gigantic ski resort was created,“ says tester Andrea Berger. The merging of the two ski resorts is especially gratifiying for free riders. It became strikingly simple to get to the famous freeriding areas in Warth-Schröcken. 340 km of long ski runs and 200 km of deep powder snow slopes are available. In combination with fantastic offers for families, modern ski lifts and an exciting nightlife, Ski Arlberg offers the most outstanding overall package.
Those in charge for Zermatt did spare neither trouble nor expanse to further improve their ski resort. The ski resort rich in tradition was awarded the second place within the ranking because of its constant aim for progress. Since 2002 the mountain railways of Zermatt have invested more than 173 million Swiss Francs in their lifts. The new funicular Sunnegga and the newly modernized station were opened in 2009. Twelve meters per second make Sunnegga the fastest funicular in Switzerland. „Zermatt earns perfect scores in all categories but always seeks for further innovation. Impressive and convincing,“ concludes tester Florian Weis.
Third place of the ranking occupies Serfaus Fiss Ladis. The region in Tirol is still one of the top ski resorts. They provide what others promise: Great offers for every skier of all skills. „The variety of Serfaus Fiss Ladis is amazing. The area is strong in every category and therefore deserves to be among the top three ski resorts,“ reports tester Martin Bauer. Especially to mention are not only the perfectly kept slopes but also the service off pistes. Particularly thought of are families. Skiing is taught playfully to children in „Bertas Kinderland“, „Murmlipark“ and „Fisser cave world“, just to mention a few.
International mid-table
The mid-table is quite international. Countries like France, Italy, Canada and Austria are represented. Number four of the ranking is the French ski resort Les 3 Vallees. The largest resort in the world earns great scores and merely has to cut back in the categories family and après-ski. „Everyone who loves skiing should ski in Les 3 Vallees at least once“, states tester Andrea Berger.
Ranked fifth is the skiing area Whistler Blackcomb in Canada. With a surface of 3,300 hectare Whistler Blackcomb is the largest skiing area in Canada. The two areas, Whistler and Blackcomb, are connected by the gondola Peak2Peak. Particularly fun for experienced skiers are Black and Double Black Run.
The Italian skiing area Gröden is our number six on the list. Italian flair provides immense comfort while skiing in Gröden. Highlight of the area is the Sellaronda on which the whole Sella group can be circuited in one day.
The seventh place goes to Ischgl in Tirol. Outstanding are the area´s offers for advanced skiers and snowboarders. „Experienced skiers will have a lot of fun in Ischgl“, knows tester Martin Bauer.
USA just makes the ranking
The ranking continues with international contestants. Number eight is Engadin St. Moritz in Switzerland. Fantastic slopes and guaranteed snow until spring convince the testers.
Ninth comes the USA with the resort Vail in Colorado. Vail convinces with amazing powder runs within the legendary Back Bowls and first class family offers.
The French ski resort Portes du Soleil takes the last spot on the list. Twelve Swiss and French resorts give the impression of an endless selection of slopes. All in all 296 runs – anyone will find their favorite here.
