Whistler Blackcomb launches elite “Ski with an Olympian" Program

Whistler Blackcomb has expanded its Snow School offerings this season with the addition of the “Ski with an Olympian” program. The program is Whistler Blackcomb Snow School’s most elite product and offers guests the opportunity to hear stories, get tips, and spend time on the mountain with an Olympic athlete as their own personal guide.

“As a proud host of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, we wanted to create a unique experience that revives the excitement the Olympics brought to Whistler,” says Rob McSkimming, Vice President of Business Development at Whistler Blackcomb. “The opportunity to spend time exploring, learning and dining with Olympians is a fun and memorable way to celebrate the Olympic legacies at Whistler Blackcomb.”

This exclusive program includes a full-day of skiing or riding guided by an Olympic athlete, with capacity capped at five people per group. Like all other Snow School lessons, this program also gives guests lift line priority. Participating Olympians are based on availability and the program includes thirteen ski and snowboard athletes. Nearly all the Olympians originate from the lower mainland of BC, bringing with them superior instruction and in-depth local knowledge of Whistler Blackcomb.  Each athlete has something unique to offer which helps to pair the Olympians skills to the needs of guests.

With a Whistler street named after him, three-time Olympian and six-time World Championship athlete, Rob Boyd is one of the most decorated Olympians involved in the program. His extensive coaching experience, including his position as head coach for the Canadian Women’s National Ski Team, makes Rob Boyd the perfect choice for guests interested in improving their all-mountain skills.

The two athletes headlining the program are home-grown Whistlerites, World Champion medalists and 2010 Ski Cross Olympians, Davey Barr and Julia Murray. Julia explains, “This program is so special because it gives us an opportunity to really connect with people and share what it’s like to be an athlete at such a memorable event. I think Whistler Blackcomb is truly the best place on earth to ski and that’s definitely why so many Olympians call Whistler home.”

Julia is the daughter of ski legend, Crazy Canuk, and two-time Olympian Dave Murray, who has a run on Whistler Mountain named in his memory. The Dave Murray Downhill run was the alpine skiing competition site for the 2010 Winter Olympics and is part of the Gold Medal Wonder Route, a suggested itinerary for skiers and riders designed to showcase all the Olympic legacy sites at Whistler Blackcomb. Olympic lesson requests are based on their availability. The “Ski with an Olympian” program will be available to guests for the duration of the 2012.2013 winter season.
