Svindal gets win in opening GS in Soelden

Defending overall World Cup winner Aksel Lund Svindal started the new season in style winning the opening race in Soelden in 2:17.87.

Ligety in second place
Norwegian Svindal, who also won the GS World Cup last season, had the fastest second run and stormed to victory at the Rettenbach Glacier. American Ted Ligety also showed an impressive race and came in second overall. Ligety led after the first run and then failed to defend his advantage with Svindal racing just better in the bottom part of the difficult course. Completing the podium was Kalle Palander from Finland ahead of Benjamin Raich.

Miller stormed to fifth place
Bode Miller (USA) was only 17th after the first run but then attacked in the final and had the third-fastest second run and moved up to fifth in 2:18.93.
