Park City Special - Greatest Snow on Earth

Powdery snow, trails that you have all to yourself, no waiting time at the lifts and three skiing areas to choose from, that is Park City! In this Park City Special, we tell you everything about the skiing areas and the city, including where to eat and sleep the best way possible.

Greatest Snow on Earth – This name says it all
At least since the Olympic Games in 2002, Park City has become known amongst German skiers. The reason is, that this is the place where the competitions in giant slalom race, snowboarding and tobogganing took place. The small town is about half an hour away, so it´s not necessary to drive many car hours after the long flight across the Atlantic. Right next to the former mining town, you can find three ski areas: Deer Valley, Park City Mountain, and The Canyons.

There are many reasons why you would go skiing here. The most outstanding, you can find on every license plate: “Greatest Snow on Earth“. In fact, there is about 13 meters of snow each winter and it´s a special kind! The snow cloud looses all of its water on the way over Utah´s deserts and so the snow falls down dry on the Wasatch Mountains. Sometimes the golden white is so dry, that it´s not even possible to make a snowball. Obviously, this is a nightmare for kids but it makes the slopes (especially the back country!) of the Park City area a paradise for skiers.
In addition, the tree- skiing is proving to be very popular. It´s banned in Europe but it´s very normal in America. You can ski through the woods whenever you desire- it´s up to you. The birch woods, which are so typical for Utah, characterize the landscape. Don´t be surprised if you find a bra hanging on the trees. That’s just part of the skiing tradition in the usually so conservative state of Utah!

Three high- class ski areas
Which ski area of Park City you choose is a matter of personal preferences. Deer Valley is a little more relaxed and most of the trails are perfectly groomed. In this private ski area, there are good chances to meet a celebrity- but only if your are not on the slopes all by yourself. Actually, this could happen as the resort closes whenever there are more than 6000 people around in the area. This ensures there are never too many people on the slopes and the lift lines are always short. But be aware: Snowboarders are not allowed!
If you prefer a board you are better off at the ski resort next to Deer Valley: Park City Mountain Resort. The two ski areas are only separated by a string. Technically, you could just switch between both of them (which is forbidden). Park City Mountain is a true paradise for snowboarders. Here is the place where you can find the biggest terrain parks and if you’re lucky you will see a true Olympic athlete during his training. In total  Park City Mountain is just a little bit more hip and cooler than Deer Valley and that’s why it´s more attracting for the younger generation.
The third ski area, The Canyons, is the youngest area in Park City. That is where you will find the locals even a real attraction, the orange bubble lift! It´s the only heated chair lift with a weather protection in North America.
