Goergl dethrons Karbon in Giant slalom

After four wins in a row Italian Denise Karbon had to defer to Elisabeth Goergl at her first World Cup victory. By two sensatinal runs the Austrian conquered the top of the podium ahead of Italians Manuela Moelgg and Denise Karbon. Kathrin Hoelzl missed the podium by a hair but she could be more than satisfied with place four in that difficult race.

Very difficult conditions on the piste
The warm temperatures made the first run very tricky. The piste which became worse and worse made it difficult for the skiers with the high bibs. Elisabeth Goergl achieved a run of her dreams. With a big margin she distanced herself from the rest of the field. Manuela Moelgg was the one who could get closest to the Austrians time while top candidate for the victory, Denise Karbon already suffered a deficit of one second.

First World Cup triumph fpr Goergl
In the final run it was Ingrid Jacquemod who clocked the minimum time on the clearly more solid course. In doing so she improved to the seventh place altogether. Karbon found back to her old strength and took the lead again for a while but her compatriot Manuela Moelgg was able to defeat her later for the first time this winter in giant slalom. After Moelgg Elisabeth Goergl showed another impressive performance and captured the victory - her first World Cup triumph ever.

Hoelzl misses the podium by a hair
On the further places Kathrin Hoelzl, Tanja Poutiainen and Nicole Hosp gained important points for the Giant Slalom World Cup standings where Denise Karbon (460) still leads ahead of Elisabeth Goergl (319), Manuela Moelgg (234) and Julia Mancuso (229). The US-American only became 20th in Maribor.
